EPW Day 4 – Dozmat – Szentpeterfa

Borders, May Day and Goulash.

Our walk has progressed through fen and field, washed fresh with passing storms. A pastoral 22 km (14.75 miles)

We wended our way across the Hungarian/Austrian border path. Pausing at a interpretive spot with WWII foxholes and trenches.

Listening to the recorded interview of a Hungarian born in the area in 1909 I’m intrigued. The continual border switching and influences that swept up this small town in Hitler’s campaigns and Jewish persecution all along this border. I can forget my foot pains of trivial comparison to this mans story.

Reinforced messages by the border watch tower made for a contemplative trek among the vast fields.

Tonight we arrived in Szentpeterfa or Saint Peters town in Hungary. We arrived to a May Day / National Children’s Day celebration. The town was lively with traditional music and Croatian dancing in a ring. Although the town resides in Hungary, most of the population is Croatian. It culminated in the cutting down of the May pole by the fire department. We adjourned to a lovely dinner of goulash or fish soup and a crepes dessert.

Tomorrow is Sunday and the trek is a 31km path along which few or no amenities are expected. James feet need another day off and my blistered toenail does too. So we’ll go to the next town by transport and aim for Monday’s trek.
